Movie Review : Fighter

When the Indian Army's surgical strikes had its share of onscreen glory with "Uri : The Surgical Strike" and Maj Vihaan Singh Shergill, could Balakot have been far behind? So here we are presented with the Indian Air Force and Squadron Leader Shamsher Pathania aka Patty. The Special Forces Para Commandos are replaced by the be-all-end-all Air Dragons.

But first things first. "Kaho Na.. Pyaar Hai" came in 2000. 24 years later, Hrithik Roshan still drools you with his tall fair and handsome aura, bear-me-if-you-can abs, those absorbing hazel green eyes, finely chiselled jaw line and basically that Greek God looks.... Enough to cheekily accept that when he says "please" to a lady, she is bound to go in a trance... And he is doing it as a weapon of surrender here for ladies!!

You have enough of all this in the first half along with an engaging chemistry with Deepika which comes to life in short bursts.

Actually the first half is very engrossing. One of the reasons I liked it is because the basics of Indian Air Force have not been messed up with. The appropriate dressing up, rank structure, Air Base decorum, mannerisms and general IAF atmosphere has been well looked into. The Coursemates' banter and unit espirit-de-corps comes out nicely on screen. Hrithik, Deepika and ageless Anil, all look dapper in the IAF uniform and have been well supported by all others of their team. The training aerial dog fights are well choreographed and gradually the stage is set up with Pulwama and Balakot for more filmy things to follow.

Then in the last one hour things change. After a very grounded and realistic first half, Director Siddharth Raj Anand suddenly seems to wake up to the reality that he is the one of "Bang Bang", "War" and "Pathaan" fame and things don't seem to be going that way till then. So we have a momentum shift towards "Pakistan ka Baap", "...Badla...", "... IOP India Occupied Pakistan..." types stuff. Plenty of "Ye Naya Hindustan Hai" types stuff. In the process, the movie drifts towards Gadar-2 way of kuch bhi and kaise bhi in last 20-30 minutes. And you still lap it up with taalis and seetis.

So go watch with family and, if possible, on 3D screen. You will come out liking the movie

Postscript : Do not miss out on the timing of release. "Uri : The Surgical Strike" was released on 11 Jan 2019. And now Pathania Saab strikes the screens on 25 Jan 2024. Aggressive nationalism is the flavour of this month every five years. No points for guessing why.
