Movie Review : OMG-2

*Movie Review : OMG-2*

A brilliant and thought provoking movie which touches an extremely important topic of teenage sex education with tremendous finesse and modesty. The Writer and Director deserves compliments for putting together a gripping plot without losing the simplicity of a middle class home.

The film does not shy away from the challenges and stigmas that surround this topic, and it does a great job of showing the importance of sex education for both young people and adults.

Conveying the essence of such messages is certainly not easy in a country like India. But a combination of a gripping plot, impeccable performances, strong hold on the narrative, and a frequent dose of humour; blended in the backdrop of Mahakaal; gives a lovely cinematic experience.

A teenager troubled by bullying and masterbation, an ignorant father resurrecting himself to take on the world so that his son can hold his head up again, a family caught in the turmoil and a devious lawyer looking at the "business" of it all. Pankaj Tripathi nails it as he always does, while Yami Gautam has done a decent job. The court scenes appear too casual on many occasions, but is intentionally done to keep the narrative light and public engaged, so that the core message is driven home.

And who better to guide the father through his battles than Mahaakaal Himself. The city of Mahakaaleshwar Temple gives a tremendous backdrop to the plot.... And Akshay Kumar... If I may say, he looks hot as the messenger of Mahadev. In his limited screen time, he is very good and brings his own brand of charisma to the role.

The Mahadev Songs and Chants boost the energy of the plot whenever they appear... Some of those I liked are

अकाल मृत्यु वो मरे, जो कर्म करे चांडाल का,

काल उसका क्या करे, जो भक्त हो महाकाल का ।।

रख विश्वास, तू है शिव का दास ।।

While Akshay is terrific on screen, the Director is careful that the focus remains firmly on Pankaj Tripathi.

Overall, the film shines through the relevance of its social message. Despite the scarcity of miraculous events and the extensive research undertaken, Tripathi's character triumphs in the courtroom, setting a necessary example for contemporary India. For a change, you watch a movie without any VFX, without any slow motions, without heavy budget movie sets and without the artificial screen bravados... Purely a cinema based on a social message and strong performances.

I read at some place that the priests of Mahakaal temple are unhappy because they are saying that Mahakaleshwar Temple has been repeatedly connected with topics of Sex ... Lord Shiva has been shown buying Kachoris, sitting inside a Police Station... Blah Blah Blah ... Come on guys, take a break...

OMG-2 is definitely a recommended viewing for everyone in all age groups. It has been given an "A" certification, that's really really sad. It not only celebrates the notion of Kama but also underscores the importance of mutual respect between genders before embarking on the sacred journey of love and procreation.

PS : You get to see Arun Govil on screen after ages.
