Pathaan (Movie Review)
Pathaan (Movie review)
Rohit Shetty realised the box office magic of getting the crowd-pullers Singham and Simba to do cameos together in Suryavanshi. It created his Cop Universe and the producers merrily laughed their way to the banks.
Now, Welcome to Yash Raj's Spy Universe. After Salman Khan set box office records with the two Tiger flicks and Hrithik's kick-ass Kabir in "War", YRF probably realised that RAW has got equal
potential of spinning money on the box office. So here comes Pathaan, with a little bit of Tiger thrown in and a little bit of Kabir here and there. If you are a hard core SRK fan, go right ahead and enjoy Pathaan. He is back on screen after, what, four years !! And it's as big as it gets. Action, style, star power, skin, stunts... loads of them all. And SRK owns every frame of the movie.
Plot... well, who cares !! When it's RAW, it's all about Pakis planning something fishy on India and our action agent putting it all to sword.
Throw in lot of slow mo entries, exaggerated speed thrills (bullet trains, cars, bikes, helicopters, ice skates, flying suits...you name it, Pathaan has it), a damsel who just cannot be in normal clothes, one liners ("ye Pathaan ka waada hai" types), gravity defying stunts, a Mission Impossible inspired virus (Remember Chimera, Rabbit's Foot et al) and a super hero and super villain fighting for immortality..... Mix it all with a dose of nationalism,,, and there you have a potboiler ready to rake in moolahs on big screen.
O, and I forgot a very important part. You got to switch off your mental faculties to really enjoy the masaala. Please do not look for any logic in whatever is happening on screen. For an audience which has seen the VFX standards of Avatar, the VFX here is really substandard. And for those who are somewhat familiar with the workings of armed forces and RAW, a lot will seem stupid. But whenever those thoughts arise, pinch yourself and remember that you do not have to venture into the "thinking territory".
This is probably SRK's first outright action movie, and he carries it well on his shoulders despite an average script. Got to admire his decision of exploring this new territory (for him) at 55+ age.
You may not be a hard core SRK fan but still would have loved his legendary romantic flicks of 90s and
early 2000s; then you probably will prefer a sweet, chubby cheeks and dimpled SRK over a 6-pack hard faced SRK. O, how he set the 90s on fire !!John Abraham is his typically muscular charming stuff with lot of tattoos thrown in, but looks too sweet to inspire any fear. Deepika looks gorgeous and her action scenes definitely show her good behind-the-scenes efforts.
But SRK-Deepika chemistry.... na, let's not talk about it.
Go watch it for SRK.
And SRK and Salman have given more than ample hints here that YRF Spy Universe is going to be dishing out many more RAW missions. I got reminded of "Mere Karan Arjun aayenge..."😂
Gosh, can't believe that Karan Arjun was 28 years back !!

Well SRK is back. So is Pushkar.
ReplyDeleteI care more for the latter. 🙂 Great to see you alive to socio-cultural happenings, as you always were!
Having given up on Bollywood long time ago, I felt incensed enough in another way to put a couple of lines of review of my own on Google:
"Pathan ties up with ISI to save India from a former Indian soldier: the short story of this typically mindless offering from Bollywood. Propaganda as vile as it is empty. Save your time and money from this Paki project."
